For our Critical Analysis paper we had to write a five page paper on a movie called Beautiful Girls. It was a very popular movie in the early 1990’s, it is also one of the best ensemble movies out there. We had to analyze it and point out the movies main arguments and if the movie achieved its goal of convincing the audience. The movie was composed of a stellar cast, which allowed just about anyone to identify themselves with at least one character. Its about a group of friends that decide to get together for their first high school reunion. During their reunion only a few realized some grew up and other didn’t that is why the main argument of this movie was maturity. I enjoyed writing this paper because we did it on a movie I hadn’t seen before. So watching the movie was actually nice and the movie was also really good. It also allowed me to write and reflect on issue about life. I don’t think there was anything I disliked about this paper, it was a good one. The one thing I would have done different, is that I would probably have more people peer edit my paper. Maybe I would change the length of the paper, even though a the end I did end up using up the five pages. My favorite part of writing this paper was writing about Marty and Willy because I was a very mature 13 year old when I was a kid and I also met someone like Willy at the time. Life is like that we are kids then grow up and everyone takes their own path. Some succeed but others don’t, and some make it and some don’t. Theirs occasion when we get the opportunity to see our old friends and sometimes it saddens us to know they are not the same anymore or that they simply have never matured. Overall it was a good paper and a great movie to write about!

For this assignment we were to get with a partner and write an informal summary with a partner. The topic was to be based from one of the stories form our They Say, I Say text book. My partner and I chose to write on the topic “Fat as a Feminist Issue.
We were to summarize it and identify the main ideas and demonstrate that we read accurately. I learned that working with a partner can sometimes turn out to be good. I usually like to work independently but my cooperated with me great so that went well. I believe I’m a leader and when working with other that feel the same way as I can be frustrating. At that point one must one must take the lead or lower themselves in a cooperative attitude to get the assignment done. I personally don’t care, I’m willing to do what it takes to do a good job and to get the assignment done. If I have a good understanding of what I’m supposed to do, I can say I’m a very competent student. The Informal summary wasn’t bad at all, I think I did good. Yes, it was almost like the informal summary the only difference is that it was individually. The text book for this class does helps out a lot. It gives out a lot of examples for anything that we may have a question on.

I went over my diagnostic essay I realized my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. Although writing hasn’t been my area, I think I have improved much over the years. As a writer I have always tried to follow the requirements asked for in each writing assignment. I can say I’m better at writing research papers than any others. That is because it excites me to learn about new things. Whereas, persuasive essays or other types of writing assignments are not so appealing or exciting. I don’t think I’m good with debate papers, it requires one to take a stance and to support it well. In other words, I show better writing skills when a topic interests me more. I would like to be able to write a perfect essay one day, any kind of essay not just research. The diagnostic essay was not hard for me to write at all because it was kind of an opinion topic. The topic was asking if it was important to have good computer literacy skills. From there you can guess its not a difficult topic to write about. Opinion papers are not so bad because we can go on and on. If I had the opportunity to re do this paper I would create a rough draft first, have another person peer edit it and then do the final paper. I would probably keep the same points and ideas, I feel confident about my responses. Length wasn’t so bad so that wouldn’t need an adjustment.

An advice the book gives, is to enter a conversation using what others say or might say as a launching pad for our own ideas. According to the book one of the main pieces of advice in this book, is to write the voices of others into our text. The book also states, how to make an impact as a writer we must do statements that are logical, well supported and consistent. The book highlights ways of responding , where we can argue with no need of arguing or disagreeing. The templates in the book are very good, they are supposed to make our writing more original and creative. The book has templates to introduce what others say, standard views, what we say and many others points. The section of the Art of Summarizing, states that a good summary requires balancing what the original author says and the writers own focus. A summary should reflect what the author says and what interested us from the author. In other words the writer and the readers points of view. I learned how important it is to know about the areas above that 5 paragraph essays don’t exist. High School teachers teach 5 paragraph essays all along but when we get to college, we are told they don’t exist. I don’t think they should be thought anymore because it makes it hard for students to adjust to a different way in college.
